Toulouse FC captain Max-Alain Gradel shares insights on preseason progress, his relationship with the new coach, and his thoughts on his future with the club.
Max-Alain, reflecting on the draw against Bordeaux (0-0), what are your thoughts?
Max-Alain Gradel: We’re happy with how the match went. It was a good opportunity to progress further in our preparation. For me, it’s all about gaining minutes, building up strength, and getting back into rhythm. The match against a strong Bordeaux side was a great test, and we’re heading in the right direction.
After nearly five months without play, how has the return to “normal” been for you?
MAG: Being sidelined for so long is tough, especially when you’re someone who loves to run and dribble. But I was fortunate. During the lockdown, I stayed in Ivory Coast, where I had more freedom compared to some of my teammates. Almost every day, I was able to train and keep fit with friends in Abidjan. That kept me in shape and made the break easier to handle.
Toulouse has seen significant changes with a new president and coach. What’s your impression of Patrice Garande?
MAG: I know Coach Garande from Ligue 1. we’ve crossed paths before. He represents a fresh start and a new project for the club. It’s a positive change, though I think it’s something that could have happened sooner. The new management and coach are ambitious and determined to move the club forward. For Toulouse, this is exactly what’s needed to progress.
You have one year left on your contract. Can Toulouse count on you to lead their return to Ligue 1?
MAG: That’s correct—I have one year left on my contract. I feel good during this preparation phase and remain committed to the club. We’ve had discussions with the management, and everything is clear between us. My priority isn’t to leave just for the sake of it.
That said, this is shaping up to be an unusual transfer window. Things are delayed, and we’ll have to see how the situation evolves. I’ve had some incredible experiences abroad, and I’m open to exploring opportunities. I enjoy leagues where the game is open and spectacular, but for now, my focus is here.
What’s your outlook for the season ahead?
MAG: It’s about taking things step by step. The changes at the club signal a strong commitment to improvement. As players, we need to match that ambition on the pitch. My role as captain is to lead by example and support the team in achieving our goals.
