Exclusive Interview with Mehdi Zerkane. On His Rise, Dreams, and Future Goals

At just 21 years old, Mehdi Zerkane has quickly made a name for himself in professional football. In this exclusive interview, he opens up about his journey, representing Algeria, and his ambitions for the future.

How do you feel after a few months of competition at this level?

Mehdi Zerkane: I feel very good. I enjoy being part of the group and feel fulfilled. It’s been a rewarding experience so far.

Does it feel like everything is moving very fast for you?

MZ: Not really. I see it as a logical progression after the hard work I put in during preparation. But I remind myself not to rush things. I’m well surrounded by supportive people at my club and in my family, which helps me stay grounded.

You recently chose to play for the Algerian national team. What led to that decision?

MZ: I could have chosen Morocco or France because of my origins, but playing for Algeria has always been a childhood dream. When I was eight, I told myself, “One day, I’ll play for Algeria.” That dream came true, and it was very special to be called up. I was welcomed into a team of top-class players like Riyad Mahrez, and during my second appearance, I played 20 minutes against Zimbabwe. That game secured our qualification for the CAN, which was incredible.

What are your goals with the Algerian team?

MZ: I want to gain more playing time, showcase my abilities, and continue contributing to the team.

Your early career saw trials with clubs like Chelsea and Real Madrid. Why did you choose Monaco?

MZ: It was a practical decision. Monaco offered financial stability and accommodation for my family, something other clubs didn’t. It felt like the best option at the time, and I don’t regret it.

Do you ever wonder what might have been if you joined one of those big clubs abroad?

MZ: Of course, as a young player, those teams are very appealing. But I believe my path might have been different, and maybe I wouldn’t have developed as I have now.

Why did you move to Bordeaux?

MZ: I wanted to join a professional group in France to continue my development. Bordeaux is a big club with history, and the confidence they showed in me made it an easy choice. I recently extended my contract until 2024, which shows how much I value being here.

Who are your football idols?

MZ: Zinedine Zidane is definitely one of them, along with Lionel Messi. Zidane’s legacy with Bordeaux also inspired me to join the club.

What are your goals with Bordeaux?

MZ: My focus is on becoming a starter, scoring goals, providing assists, and helping the team succeed. It’s about taking things step by step and continuing to grow.

How do you find working with experienced players like Hatem Ben Arfa?

MZ: It’s great! Hatem and I have a good relationship. He’s very open and shares advice, which helps a lot. Playing alongside talented teammates like him and learning from their experience is invaluable.

Lastly, what’s your approach to upcoming matches, like against PSG?

MZ: We treat it like any other match. PSG is a great team with exceptional players, but we’ll go in with the same mindset and give our best effort.
